Recent and Ongoing Projects:

I am working on a second edition of Hidden Markov Models and Dyanmical Systems. Here is a recent draft.
I presented a poster, Entropy, Cross Entropy and Data Assimilation at Dynamics Days US 2025. The only new feature of the poster was the use of a particle filter to model time series of discrete symbols generated by the Lorenz system.
On November 19, 2024 the Los Alamos County Council approved spending $35M on a project to make fiber broadband available throughout the county. See my advocacy for this result at blabnow.blog.
At the 2023 SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems I presented Using Discrete State Hidden Markov Models to Estimate Heart Rate.
At the 2021 SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems the title of my talk was Data Assimilation and Software for Reliability in which I summarized the software tools I'm using now.
Writing code for the book takes more time that writing the text. I use the Nix package manager, and for now the two repositories hmm and hmmds are not easy to use in other environments. From the root of the hmmds package, I can build each of the works mentioned above by issuing a command like make ds23.

On 2025-01-10 Google Scholar found 8,511 citations to my work, and listed 55 articles.
I believe that my early papers about mutual information have been widely cited because I posted the code for the work on the Internet in 1986. Since people occasionally ask for that outdated code, I post it here.
The last project that I worked on at the Los Alamos National Laboratory concerned the equation of state of the gasses produced by detonating chemical explosives. Imitating the 1960s TV show The Man from UNCLE, I called the project Functional UNcertainty Constrained by Law and Experiment (F U.N.C.L.E.). Here is a poster from SciPy2016 which has a nice picture of Napoleon Solo, played by Dr. Robert Vaughn, and Illya Kuryakin, played by David McCallum. Here is the proceedings paper. And here is a summary of a presentation at NEDPC (Nuclear Explosives Design Physics Conference) in 2019.
